2008 (July)
17th July 2008: Inspire is born in Scott Street, Perth, Scotland.
2008 (July)
After extensive market research into the competition, Inspire discovered that many agencies built websites with little to no aftercare - leaving clients to fend for themselves.
2008 (July)
Inspire ran competitions across the UK, US and India to identify and attract the best development talent.
2008 (August)
Inspire carried out door-to-door canvassing across Perth city centre and local industrial estates, visiting every business without an online presence and handing out flyers promoting their website design and development services.
2008 (August)
Leveraging David's experience and background in the Scottish licensed trade sector, Inspire began working with many local clients, including bars, restaurants, hotels, and high street retail shops.
The first client was Brennan's Bar in Perth.
2008 (August)
Inspire learned that, while many in the UK claim to be highly capable LAMP stack web developers, the reality is quite different.
Many so-called web developers are actually designers using off-the-shelf templates, despite presenting themselves as developers.
This realisation marked the start of a long-term effort to educate client partners on the crucial difference between using aesthetically pleasing template solutions with weak technical foundations and ongoing maintenance challenges, and investing in a tailored website built to stand the test of time.
2008 (September)
No more compromising.
As PHP developers, the team is no longer hamstrung by the limitations of any particular template or platform, such as WordPress.
Exceptional under-the-bonnet engineering ensures a low level of maintenance, allowing future client budgets to be guided away from general upkeep towards improving visibility, functional excellence, and meeting evolving needs.
All this is achieved through investing in processes, protocols, and frameworks designed to deliver websites aligned with clients’ objectives and end-user needs.
2008 (October)
To emphasise the pace of change, David coined the phrase, “One real month is the equivalent of one web year!”
By that measure, a website that’s five years old in real terms is effectively 60 years old in web terms.
2008
Inspire’s first logo was an interesting one, built around four core ideas:
- Pragmatic – connect directly with customers in a physical way through the use of keyboard keys, something they interact with every day.
- Specialist – reflect Inspire’s choice to focus on true web development, rather than relying on off-the-shelf template websites.
- Clarity – make clear that Inspire offers web development, not just design.
- Inspire – show clients that we can deliver on their vision.

2008
Inspire ended the year with a core team of four full-time staff: one designer, one developer and two business analysts/project managers, supported by a handful of trusted freelancers.
2009 (January)
Following a widespread criminal scam in Perth targeting many high street retail businesses - where perpetrators took 50% of website fees before disappearing - Inspire recognised the need to strengthen their business connections, raise brand awareness and build greater credibility.
As a result, Inspire joined BNI Fair City, beginning a 15-year membership that eventually saw four staff members active in chapters across Dundee, Dunfermline, Glasgow, Perth and internationally.
2009 (March)
Continuing efforts to strengthen business connections and raise awareness of Inspire as a trusted, credible partner, the team joined the Perthshire Chamber of Commerce.

2009 (March)
Inspire developed their own LAMP stack CMS website framework, launching it as the “IWD Website” range - an economical solution designed for security, reliability and longevity. The CMS engine and database were encrypted and made closed source, adding an extra layer of protection for clients.
The IWD Website range went on to become one of Inspire’s most successful products, with many clients able to redirect funds into improving functionality and visibility, as opposed to being dragged down by website maintenance, for over a decade.
IWD Website Package
Package Includes:
- 9-page website
- Hosting, backups, and maintenance
Pricing:
- £69 + VAT setup
- £34.49 + VAT per month
Contract:
- Minimum 2-year term

2009 (August)
Inspire launched a range of licensed trade websites for Belhaven Brewery Company in Dunbar.
Tailored to each major channel of trade, these websites ensured the digital presence matched the unique identity and needs of each venue type:
- Destination Modern
- Food & Family, Traditional
- Community
- Accommodation-led
- Restaurants
- Nightclub
- Sports-led
- Local (Premium vs Value)

2010
Client demand pushed Inspire beyond building websites and into building systems - from pricing engines and diary or calendar booking tools, to conference and event software and early workflow systems. This shift supports organisations dealing with diseconomies of scale and those looking to enable customer self-service through their website.
2010
Inspire’s brand refresh follows feedback that the existing brand no longer reflected our growing, cross-functional capability, including design.
A fresh, vibrant colour scheme introduced new colours and the flame logo for the first time, replacing the tired keyboard.
The flame represents Inspire lighting the way forward in a complex and often contradictory world, while the encircling arc symbolises our commitment to caring for and protecting clients.
Client demand also pushes Inspire beyond websites and into building systems - from booking engines to conference and event software, and early workflow systems - as more organisations experience diseconomies of scale.

2010
Inspire end the year with the recruitment of four additional developers, marking the first time the team split into back-end and front-end development specialisms. The total number of full-time staff is now 11.
2011 (July)
Following a vain, glorious attempt to become the most followed on Twitter, Inspire pivoted to monitoring Twitter chatter for users complaining about website issues, using Twitter and Hootsuite, and then replying, offering help and support.
This approach led to several interesting opportunities, including work in Philadelphia, Las Vegas, Scandinavia, Brazil and Australia.
2011
Inspire formalised the practice of having twice a year Website Reviews for every client.
To reinforce a closer working client relationship with every client, understand their current challenges and opportunities, as well as provide guidance on improving their online return, every client - regardless of what they pay - is offered a website review covering the following areas:
- Any Elephants in the Room
- Fit for Purpose
- Data Mountain
- What's Coming Next
2012 (January)
Inspire launch their first US client website for Stackem Coaching.
Interestingly Stackem Coaching was founded by several World Series Poker players looking to replace lost endorsement income due too online gambling being suspended in the USA by the FBI in November 2011, by launching a dedicated poker coaching platform for face to face players.
This led to a series of other poker coaching websites across both the US and the UK.
Discussions follow for Ben Affleck, resulting in Developer SOS work on a New York-based poker site.

2012
Inspire carry out a 5,000-flyer drop to businesses across Tayside, Angus, Fife, and Stirlingshire.

Inspire chose to decline the opportunity to progress the project and revisit our marketing channels.
2012
Following feedback during client Website Reviews, Inspire launched a set of Search Visibility services, including Backlinks, SEO Blog Copywriting and Local Map Optimisation - referred to internally as "Knowledge Graph Panel Optimisation" or KGPO for short.
A new project manager and digital marketer/copywriter were recruited, but with other staff changes during the year, Inspire ended the year with 10 full-time team members.
2013 (June)
Stirling based Denvir Marketing appoint Inspire to provide Developer SOS support.
2013 (September)
Inspire rebranded their Developer SOS service using A-Team style branding, positioning themselves as approachable, friendly specialists in web development and web security.
Using a "No Fix - No Fee" tagline, the Developer SOS service demonstrates our confidence in Inspire's capability to deal with any web issue. Over time, this evolves to include Search Visibility issues.
By being open to dealing with issues of all kinds, both common and rare, Inspire's expertise and experience deepens across many php based website platforms.

2014 (March)

Hmmm.
Received website enquiry from London-based business, BuildYourOwnDungeon.com, requesting nearly the full suite of Inspire’s services - including Search Visibility (Organic and Paid Search), Paid Social, Facilities Management for Website and full design and development.
Coincidentally, this came shortly after Inspire had delivered several basement waterproofing website projects in Scotland. However, further conversation revealed this was not quite the same type of business.
The prospective client was looking to build an online store for selling adult merchandise.
Although the budget was attractive and the affiliate revenue tempting, Inspire declined to progress the project, advising that it was a “very niche sector.”
2014
Inspire appointed their first Marketing Manager, this brings the total team to 11 staff.
2015 (February)
M3 Networks selected Inspire to take over the rebuilding of their client websites from DotNet Nuke to Inspire's own IWD Platform, as well as hosting, support and maintenance, whilst they focus their growth around being Scotland's leading Cyber Security specialists.

Inspire win tender to design and build Deputy First Minister of Scotland and Cabinet Secretary for Finance, Constitution and Economy, John Swinney MSP's website.
Part of the process to win the tender was understanding the compliance required by the Scottish Parliament, as well as various security considerations that needed to be handled.
This would become the first of several websites designed and built for politicians serving in both the Scottish Parliament and Palace of Westminster.
John would later go on to become First Minister of Scotland in 2024.

2015 (December)
St George’s School for Girls appointed Inspire to provide "Facilities Management for Website" services for their Silverstripe website, on the back of their previous partner existing development support for Silverstripe.
While Silverstripe was a new PHP CMS platform for Inspire to manage and develop upon, our proactive support and continuous professional development over the following eight years ensured a stable and secure presence.
Many version updates, third party integrations and new functionality would be added over the next eight years, ensuring the website was able to evolve in line with the schools marketing and operational objectives.
After eight successful years of support relationship, Inspire won the tender to rebuild the extensive website in CRAFT, in collaboration with their design partners, Platinum Creative.

Understanding both the widespread ramifications and recognising the volume of effort required, Inspire began planning and evaluating what to do to ensure compliance, how to represent this online, as well as scheduling effort to update hundreds of websites.
All of this was managed and delivered within **the** original timescale, compared to the rest of the industry, which lobbied successfully for a one-year grace period to allow EU member states longer to implement.

2017
Inspire won the contract to support and maintain the Scone Palace website.
This follows a deep investigation into its intermittent downtime being traced to the shared server being unable to handle high traffic volumes, and an almost impossible to navigate Server Dashboard from Digital Ocean that can only be managed from a mobile app.
Through Inspire's "Facilities Management for Website" service, Inspire recommends Scone Palace have their own virtual and dedicated server solution, but use Inspire's buying power with ANS, based in Manchester, to negotiate their own dedicated server.
Inspire will manage the relationship with ANS and Scone Palace will pay ANS directly for the dedicated server.
Scone Palace now has the best available server solution for their budget and Inspire are paid to manage any and all server related tasks under the new proposed Support & Maintenance contract.
This marks the first time Inspire uses their negotiating power to ensure a client can use their bargaining power to source the best available server.
Future work includes ensuring the website can handle huge jumps in traffic, circa 20k concurrent database connections during a live Mary Berry TV broadcast from Scone Palace

2017

With new staff comes new ways of working and various requests to add new platforms for internal comms, task management and project management.
In advance of Inspire's application to become one of the first in Scotland to have Cyber Essentials accreditation, a review of all platforms used by Inspire staff is carried out.
This review leads to the creation of Inspire's platform ecosystem, customer journey, business process mapping, roadmap and two-year plan to migrate from so many different platforms.
Gone are Skype, Excel (which had been used for all time recording (billable and non-billable), holiday and absence tracking), Windows Explorer, Trello, Basecamp, PBWiki and Microsoft Project and hello to Microsoft Teams, OpenProject, Toggl, HubSpot and HR Breathe.
Teamworks is a late but powerful addition for what is now known as the Visibility team.
The exercise will take almost two years, but the benefits are significant, as it not only reduces licence costs but leads to improved productivity, faster access to client history and reduced time spent onboarding new staff.
For the first time, ALL staff can now see what their colleagues across the whole business have delivered that day via the MS Teams channel titled "End of Day" (EOD).
2018 (August)
Inspire Digital Fife office opens in Rosyth, Fife.
2018 (November)
Inspire staff begin holding morning "Huddles - Planned for Today" by department, with each team member sharing what they plan to accomplish that day and what a great day would look like for both the client and them.
Staff post what they've planned for that day on the new MS Teams channel and quickly competition grows between peers on what is delivered by the end of day.
An unexpected benefit is team members holding each other accountable for what a good day looks like. Improvements follow in morale, productivity and less time needed from management to check up on work status.
Two great ideas are quickly suggested and adopted:
- Copy/paste the entry posted at 0830-0845 during the "Huddle - Planned for Today" to the "End of Day" with a line through showing what was completed that day, along with what was added to their day, represented with a "+" to show it is an extra task.
- Fostering cross department collaboration.

Within one day, Inspire has moved from being a business with both office based and remote staff to solely remote.
Inspire introduces the mantra of "Thriving, not Surviving". This is in comparison to soon after Inspire started trading in 2008 when "Surviving" was adopted.
Clients do not notice any change in service levels and the business starts to plan how to help clients during the COVID pandemic.
2020 (March)
In light of the Covid pandemic, a number of changes are made to Inspire's working practices.
Staff rename their daily "Huddle" to "Huddle - Planned for Today", posting on the new MS Teams channel what they intend to work on throughout the day and which client they are working for.
While Planned for Today meetings continued, the physical posting allowed staff to take ownership of their commitments, deadlines and who they are working for.
The "End of Day" channel evolved as well, with morning posts copied over and updated as follows:
- Completed tasks are crossed out
- Tasks still in progress remain unchanged
- New tasks are added with a "+" and task title
- Any billables are also noted for the Book Keeper to raise invoicing or bills to match staff purchases.
This process fosters peer-to-peer accountability, helps reduce management overheads, staff equipment purchases are fast tracked and renews focus on who we are working for.
Planning on how to "Thrive, Not Survive" is started, with email comms and social posts.
Outreach campaign executed to former competitors and supplier partners who are either laying off or furloughing staff, with an offer to support them as either a white label service or in-partnership.

The whole team contributes to what will become a much improved recruitment process, which includes case study and project work for potential candidates and introduces psychometric testing through e-Talent.
Throughout the year, there are six new starts and five departures, including the hiring of a Head of Design, Web Designer, Digital Marketer and Project Manager.

GoDaddy announced they will be retiring their own email product after repeated hacks and significant spam issues.
Having tried to use GoDaddy's own Microsoft 365 offering, Inspire discovered it is limited in how it can be configured and managed. The outcome is a decision to become a tenant of Giacom for all Microsoft 365 licences.

The company hired 11 new team members and said goodbye to 17.
Even with a slower to hire process in place, 13 new hires lasted less than 6 weeks as improved packages elsewhere proved too tempting.

In just 30 minutes, we’ll help you identify how your business can succeed online.
Our team uses a variety of cutting-edge business frameworks - from Blue Ocean Strategy, Business Model Canvas, Value Proposition Fit - as well as experience in using AI going back to 1984: a year before Back to the Future came out.
We are not like other web design or digital marketing agencies; we put the hard graft into understanding what pain you are solving for your consumers and work backwards from there to partner in building you a very special online presence.
